Initial certification

The Automotive Certification Course exam

Every new salesperson and dealer in Ontario writes this exam through Georgian College's Automotive Business School of Canada before they can register with OMVIC. DealerPrep is the study companion you use alongside the official course material: 175 free practice questions here, every answer cited to the section behind it.

Exam format

  • Questions: 60 multiple choice
  • Time: 90 minutes
  • Passing grade: 80% (48 of 60 correct), effective January 1, 2026
  • Open book: hardcopy manual only, no electronics
  • Delivery: webcam-proctored online or in-person
  • Re-write: one attempt per course registration; writing again means a new registration form and the course fee again

What it covers

The official manual, end to end. Topics include the MVDA and its regulations, OMVIC's role and enforcement, registration classes and exemptions, the Licence Appeal Tribunal, advertising and all-in pricing rules, mandatory disclosures, the Compensation Fund, the Code of Ethics, record-keeping, trade-ins, leasing and finance, safety standards, complaints and trust accounts.

How DealerPrep helps

Start with the free diagnostic: 17 questions, one from each certification topic, and a readout that scores every area against the 80% pass line and names the topic to open first. Then drill the ones in red with the 175 free practice questions here, every answer explained and cited to the section it comes from. Lifetime access, $59 CAD once, adds timed mocks up to the real format (60 questions, 90 minutes, a fresh draw every sitting), drill sets that bring back your wrong answers, and flashcards for the dollar thresholds and timelines the exam asks about.

Sample readout 17 topics

The regulator 4 / 5
Paperwork 3 / 4
The deal 1 / 4
Protecting the buyer 3 / 3
Running the business 1 / 1

An example, not a score. 12 of 17 right across the five areas.

How long does the course take?

The course is self-study with up to 12 weeks to complete from the date of registration. Most candidates use the bulk of that window; DealerPrep is designed for the daily 20-minute commit between car sales rather than a binge before the exam.

What you get for passing

The C.A.L.E. (Certified in Automotive Law and Ethics) designation, and the basis to apply for OMVIC registration. Once you are registered, the registration runs to the expiry date printed on your certificate of registration (O. Reg. 333/08, s. 17) rather than to a fixed term set in the legislation. OMVIC opens renewal 60 days before that date.

From September 2026, Georgian College issues a digital badge in place of a physical certificate to everyone who passes with at least 80 per cent.

Practise the exam, not the PDF

175 free questions on this site, at least four in every one of the 17 certification topics, every answer cited to the section behind it. No account, nothing to install.
